Cruising along the Mekong

Yesterday, despite not being able to hook up with an old work colleague Felicity due to her relocation to Hanoi, we took a smooth two-hour bus trip to the bustling town of the Mekong Delta, My Tho, 70 km from HCMC. From My Tho, we jumped on a boat for a stunning cruise along the infamous Mekong river to view Dragon Island, Unicorn Island, Pheonix Island and Tortoise Island. On the way we viewed a fishing port with stilit houses and stopped for lunch in the heart of the orchard by the river where many locals lived. We then hired a rowing boat and cruised around the various islands sampling local tropical fruits, honey and heard some local Vietnamese folk music performed by a group called 'The Islanders' (original name....:))

We then cruised along the river further to visit a coconut candy mill, the Tan Thack Canal covered in water coconuts and like a scene out of a famous war movie..

Having visited various parts of Cambodia and Laos previously including the Northern part of the Mekong and the Tonle Sap lake, I was so surprised at the vastness of this amazing river and would recommend doing a 3 day cruise if anyone's thinking of visiting Vietnam in the future..here are some highlights:
